Meet Darryl

Actor | Producer | Martial Artist | Instructor | Advocate | Entrepreneur

Darryl K. Phipps is an American actor, film producer, martial artist, and entrepreneur. He is the oldest of 3 children of Karen Phipps and the oldest of 6 children of Darryl Logan. He was born in Flushing, Queens, New York. He lived in New York until he was around one year of age. A part of his family eventually packed up and headed to Cleveland and Houston, TX, to avoid the high rent cost in NYC.

Phipps was the victim of abuse between the ages of 5 to 11. Eventually, this abuse led to his sister Tisha’s (age 7) death by his mother. His mom was sent to prison for 99 years. She was convicted for murder and severe physical and emotional abuse to Darryl. He was eventually put into several foster homes from age 11 to 18, along with his much younger sister Chimene Jasmine Lewis.

In Darryl’s first foster home, he was placed with the Hutchinson family in Houston, TX. Jim and Bobby Hutchinson already had two kids of their own and excepted Darryl and his sister Chimene into their home. They were big into the world of Boy Scouting. The Hutchinson’s were also the leaders of troop 1008. Darryl immediately took a liking to the organization and joined. This was the first time Darryl took part in anything. (Darryl eventually became senior patrol leader, vice chief of camping promotions for the OA, a Life Scout, and a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow (OA).

Because of the violent past that Darryl was accustomed to, he began to start acting out and getting into trouble in middle school. He began to get suspended and sent home regularly. He was asked to leave the Hutchinson home and was eventually sent to a shelter for two months around the Houston area until the state of Texas found his next home. He was then sent to an RTC “Residential Treatment Center” in Goldthwaite, TX, on a ranch called New Horizons Ranch in the middle of nowhere. He lived and went to school on this Ranch for close to 2 years, receiving therapy and more before eventually returning to foster homes to join the real world.

“I am constantly being asked questions about how I have turned my life into what it is today. The thing is, there was a lot over a long journey. First, I have a relationship with Jesus, and I had a lot of great wisdom from church members that cared. I surrounded myself with brilliant and successful people. I had to have the will to become better and become something. The biggest change that needed to happen was I needed to put myself in unfamiliar situations to challenge myself. I needed to go outside my comfort zone. That’s why I left Texas and everyone I knew to move to NY.”
